About College Essay Grader: How We Score Your Essay

What College Essay Grader is

College Essay Grader is a free AI tool that gives a college essay a structured first read. Paste a Common App personal statement, a UC Personal Insight Question response, or a supplemental essay of 50 to 800 words, and you get a 100-point score, six dimension scores, and feedback that points at specific lines in your own essay.

It is built for students who want a quick, consistent read on a draft between conversations with a counselor or teacher, and who want to see whether a revision actually made the essay stronger.

How a college essay is scored

Every essay is read against the same six dimensions, each scored 1 to 10 and weighted equally into the 100-point total:

• Narrative strength — does the story have a real arc?
• Specificity — could only this applicant have written it?
• Reflection and insight — does it show a change in thinking, not just a stated lesson?
• Authentic voice — does it sound like a real student?
• Writing execution — is it clear, controlled and concise?
• Overall admissions value — what does a reader learn about the applicant?

Quick Review gives the score, a note on each dimension and the next change to make. Full Review adds verbatim evidence from the essay for every score, three revision priorities and a note on each paragraph. Quotes in the feedback are checked against the essay before you see them, and a Quick Review and a Full Review of the same draft give the same scores.

See how we score and the guides for each Common App and UC prompt.

What it will not do

• It never writes or rewrites your essay, and never invents experiences.
• It does not predict admission to any college. The score is writing feedback, not an admissions decision.
• It does not replace a counselor, teacher or other human reader who knows you.
